 What’s happened this week:

• Facebook  have filled for their IPO to raise USD5bn, we can now see some of the real numbers behind the social juggernaut; 2.7bn likes/comments per day, USD388m spent on R&D and over USD3bn of advertising revenue.
• Sky announced a new over the top TV service so that any UK consumer can watch pay TV over a broad band connection, with a variety of new payment models.
• A major (if somewhat unsettling) leap forward as computers can now read linguistic thoughts, leading to new kinds of neural interface.

 What we have learned:

• Average UK broadband speeds have increased 22% in 12 months to 7.6mbps.
• Almost half a billion smartphones were bought in 2011, more than all desktops, laptops and tablets combined.
• The UK is the 4^th largest twitter country with over 20m accounts.
